Hmmm. Not sure the numbers add up.

This past weekend me and the missus decided to can homemade apple sauce.

If you add it all up:
round trip drive to the orchard $5.40 (fuel)
3 half bushel bags of various apples $60.00 (gala, mac, honey crisp, cortland)
Ball canning utensil kit $7.50
canning kettle $25.00
2 flats of Ball quart jars $32.00
food mill $50.00

=  $179.90
yield = 16 jars of apple sauce
= $11.24 per jar

in addition there remain a couple of bags of frozen apples for pie making.

If you amortize the cost of the hardware =
over 5 years (although all of the kitchenware will last well beyond that point) = $16.50
94.40 + 16.50 = $6.93 per jar

and I could go on with permutations to keep bringing the cost per quart down. Even if I've beaten retail pricing -- what am I gonna do with 16 quarts of apple sauce?
